Winter Quarter '25

Learning about biostatistics 310 with my new friend

This quarter, I enrolled in biostatistics to fulfill my mathematics requirement for my biology major. I left the class with enriched understanding of the statistical measurements used in biology research! My performance in the class exams was satisfying to see since my studying had paid off. I was pleased when I received my 1st exam back. I remember being fixated on which section of the exam I lost two points, and realizing that the process is the point. Personal growth happens through making errors, and learning from them.

Balancing fun and work is vital for long term success. In this class, I recognized the importance of group studying and mutual support. I met my best friend Karen from this class. I sat next to a random person since I knew no one in the class. I had no idea that I was meeting someone that would change my life for the better.  I learned that persevering when you struggle with practice problems is one of the most important parts of the journey. I enjoyed my professor's supportive spirit and her teaching style. I recall receiving my graded exam and reviewing it with my study buddy. We would study together, and encourage each other to grow and learn.

Organizing our Give Kids A Smile 2025

Every year, Floss Boss, the mobile dental clinic I volunteer for, organizes an event called Give Kids A Smile (GKAS for short) which provides free dental health education for 2nd graders. On February 24, 2025 we went to McMickens Heights Elementary School to teach ~100 students about oral care and preventative health. I remember translating for a student that was Spanish-speaking and seeing the impact that languages makes in connecting concepts. Not only did students grasp the material better in their native language, but they also felt represented. We had our tooth fairy come in and teach the children about nutrition, and detail which foods are beneficial and detrimental to our oral health. Altogether, I believe the children had a great time learning about their teeth and how to take care of their body.

The higher neuroplasticity in the little kids was amazing to see in real time. We went over the anatomy of our teeth and during the Kahoot they were able to recall a lot of the material. The students impressed me with their nearly immediate grasp of the knowledge. The volunteer dental assistants were amazing with the kids, and they all enjoyed the opportunity to practice public service and personal growth. Presentations skills and leadership are skills that I seek to improve constantly. This experience was also an example of experiential learning because organizing the event and bringing it to life was a process I learned outside of the traditional classroom.

Developing my culinary skills

This winter quarter I leaned into cooking and learned to make mole, a traditional Oaxacan spicy sauce. It was not nearly as impressive as my Abuelita's, but the notes of chocolate and spicy chilis elevated the chicken. I also learned to make acai bowls which turns out to be easier than I expected! I bought the acai powder required to give the color and flavor. I blended with my choice of fruits, and then I topped it off with granola, almonds, and honey.

I also learned how to make tomato based soup with chicken and potatoes. I learned to incorporate several flavor profiles from the potatoes, chicken broth, and tomatoes to make a flavorful soup. I made enchiladas, and I learned to make the chipotle pepper-based sauce that would coat the tortillas. I garnished the enchiladas with Mexican blend cheese, Crema Oaxaceña, Oaxacan cheese, and lettuce.

My meatball soup is a work in progress and I think I will change the protein I use from turkey to beef or chicken next time I prepare the soup. The texture of boiled ground turkey was slightly off. All in all, I am proud of my personal growth in culinary skills since I learned more about spices, flavors, and my Oaxacan heritage. All in all, this made me feel close to home and reminded me of my family's home-cooked meals.
