Mariela Hernandez Honors Portfolio
University of Washington
Hello,
My name is Mariela Hernandez Rodriguez. I am originally from Wenatchee, Washington and my parents are originally from Oaxaca, Mexico. My spirit and source of motivation is derived from my community that inspires and encourages me. I enjoy learning about new topics in class, especially biology, sociology, and public health. I feel the happiest when I am outdoors, breathing fresh air, and living new experiences. I love public service and helping community members in need. I am working toward attending dental school.
Outside of class, I spend my free time crocheting, browsing farmers markets, attending mass, and cooking new dishes. One of my biggest goals is to pay forward the mentorship that I have been blessed to experience from my mentors. I make myself a resource for younger students applying for undergraduate schools, and pre-dental students. I am a first generation student and can relate to the difficulties that I experienced from not having a role model with a blueprint to reference. I can fully empathize with youth that face problems that are out of their control. Youth growing up in marginalized communities have a higher likelihood of experiencing primary or secondary drug use, homelessness, poverty, and face more injustice in their walk through life.
These disparities move me to make a difference and help provide quality care to underserved communities. It has been an honor to study in Seattle, the busiest and largest city of Washington. I will continue to progress and pave my path forward in the years to come!
Some of my favorite quotes are:
“If you win you win; if you lose, you learn.” -Lionel Richie
“God is within her, she will not fall: God will help her at break of day.” -Psalm 46:5
